So, I decided to give this Iggy chick a chance. To be honest, I had low expectations and lucky I did, because ‘The New Classic’ absolutely blew me away, unexpectedly. It didn’t sit right with me that she was Aussie born and raised, rapping with an American accent. Anything goes in the music industry these days. But, then you listen to her talk and read her story, and it makes sense. ‘The New Classic’ is a great introduction to the next big thing in rap. No, seriously. I’m very impressed.

She says in two of her songs, ‘No money, no family. 16 in the middle of Miami’ which is the recurring theme in the more autobiographical tracks on the album. Songs like Walk The Line, Work and Change Your Life give you a glimpse of a girl who acknowledges where she comes from, giving mention to her roots in Australia, and is proud of everything she’s accomplished during her journey to now. Change Your Life is a great colab with the guy who would eventually go on to change her life and sign her – T.I. Furthermore, I dare to say, Work is my favourite on the album. With its one liner chorus and catchy, heavy hip-hop bounce beat, it’s a great one for a party.

There’s your typical rap songs where brand names are dropped, and there’s all that rich people talk. The slow and sexy 100 and the reggae-like Lady Patra are two guilty of just that. Fuck Love, which then goes on to say in the chorus ‘…give me diamonds,’ carries spoilt and arrogant lyrics, but it’s fair to say you can overlook that and enjoy it with a good shoulder dropping dance and hard hip hitting moves.

Don’t Need Y’all will tell you, haters gon’ hate and fakers gon’ fake. While, Impossible Is Nothing, though a little boring, does convey the message that she will lead as an example that even if you think it’s impossible, you can do anything. These songs are for her haters. Iggy has said before that people would laugh at her and say that her “raps suck.” Well, for a chick that has actaully been doing this since 2010, she sure told them where to stick their opinions.

She has a few fun songs to break up the real and deep stuff. Songs like the well known Fancy and Bounce don’t have significant messages. It’s just for clubs that would be loving those two types of tracks, because they can fill dance floors.

New Bitch and of course Black Widow featuring Rita Ora, expresses girl power and female dominance in a relationship. While, Rolex hints to a little diss toward ex, ASAP Rocky. Well, at least I think so.

‘The New Classic’ is poppy without the cheesiness. Iggy never lacks personality in her flow, regardless of the topic and whether it’s a profound message she’s trying to convey or not. I also love the fact that the lyrics are easy to follow and learn in each song. Top 40 radio finally has something hip-hop-ish to play. We take Iggy seriously because she’s been serious about her game for ages. This album is proof of her hard work. It overflows with confidence and makes you pay attention to what is to come from this 24 year old.

I like ‘The New Classic’ by Iggy Azalea enough to give it 4 and a half stars!
