Listen here DC and co. This is how you make two story lines (well, sort of) work together to become one. The Marvel Universe does it again, doing better than DC. Let’s be honest, as expected.

Similar to Batman V Superman (how it stabs me in the heart that there’s even a slight comparison), the world blames the Avengers for all the death and destruction that has happened; from New York to Sokovia. Government officials say the Avengers go out and fight with ‘unlimited power and no supervision’. So, they ask them to sign an agreement, correspondent with the UN, where they can only be deployed to combat when asked. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr), manipulated by a woman (Alfre Woodard) waiting for an elevator that was never coming, is shown a picture of her son who died during the battle of Sokovia against Ultron. ‘I blame you,’ she tells him. That’s why he wants it signed. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) however, doesn’t want a bar of it. He believes, still, that the Avengers are here to ‘save the world’, collateral damage expected, and doesn’t want anything tying them down. This is what causes the two guys to go head to head.

With that, we are introduced to the Nigerian King and his son T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), or should I say, Black Panther. T’Challa has his own vendetta to fulfill, and this includes going after Bucky (Sebastian Stan). The Black Panther element is important. This will lead us into his own movie (so yes, wait until the end of the first set of credits).

Daniel Bruhl who we’ve seen incredibly play Niki Lauda in Rush alongside Thor himself, is a great psychopath. I’d love to see him do more creepy bad guy stuff. His part and story in Civil War is a little lost, but it is the second story line I mentioned earlier on. Nevertheless, it does tie into why Bucky is a target for team Iron Man, hence, making two story lines work as one.

There are bits in this story which require some idea of what has happened throughout the Avengers story so far. But, you’re not completely obligated as such, because previous facts and events are easily understood as the story progresses and situations are explained.

I’d love to say that Civil War is a typical Avengers movie, and it is in a way, but there are slight differences. The action is there, of course. It is never short of a spectacle in these movies, thanks again to the Russo brothers. The airport battle will go down in history like the battle of New York and the battle of Sokovia. But I believe it’s how the story ties together that dominates more than any of the action scenes.
These movies always have great humour, also. Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) throws around genius puns when he appears, but the rest of the Avengers and co., toned down their comedy to make way for the newbies. Queue the new Spiderman (Tom Holland) and our beloved Ant-Man (Paul Rudd). Every time they appeared in scene, they were the stars.

The new Peter Parker/Spiderman is adorable, and his ignorance to the world and what’s happening is so well played. Paul Rudd as Ant-Man again is just as good as his role in his own film (see review: https://peachandbuck.com/film-review-ant-man/).

I absolutely loved the third installment of Captain America. Yes, okay, I am a little bias about Marvel stuff, but can you blame me? They have not gotten it wrong so far. There were some slow bits, slower than what we are used to, but they were necessary to the story.

Captain America: Civil War is worth the trip to watch it on the big screen. 4 out of 5. Don’t forget to wait until the end of the rolling credits also.

I also wanted to add how much I especially loved the bit in the end, when my former boyfriend made us wait in the cinema until everybody completely left and for the screen to go completely black, before he went on his knee and became my fiancé. Marvel was even there for our engagement.
