The lead up to Deadpool’s release was epic. The funny billboards, the posters that made it look like a romance film just in time for Valentine’s Day, and all those extra ads Ryan Reynolds played in as Deadpool to promote anything from prostate cancer awareness and even to wish us a happy Australia Day. The lead up was nothing short of sarcastic and hilarious, and the film itself is the exact same thing we saw from that lead up. It is one massive laugh, nothing serious, nothing dramatic and dark; very simple, but very witty, and even when it goes serious, it doesn’t last. It’s even genius how he pokes fun at other superhero films and makes intelligent puns. Basically, what I’m trying to say is, not only is the costume, choreography and acting fantastic, but the writing is immaculate.

There is a story line, which I won’t give away too much about, since the trailers don’t really give too much neither, but it is kind of faded away in the background, and covered with all the comedy which is way too profound. One thing you must remember going into this, is that this Marvel movie is nothing like the others. It is especially nothing like its fellow X-Men movies which are usually dark and serious. Take that expectation completely out of your mind, and you will enjoy it.

This film is about Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) and Wade Wilson alone. He’s not saving the planet from an alien invasion, or anything else we’ve seen from the previous Marvel Universe films. This is a personal vendetta, with a tiny love story and though he’s able to heal quick and his enemy Ajax (Ed Shrein) feels no pain (you know, because they’re mutants and this is an X-Men movie), this is far beyond and far apart from any of the other movies. I cannot stress that enough.

Let’s step back a bit and remember Deadpool from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. That Deadpool was the complete opposite. You will be shocked by the different take on it now. We know by now that Reynolds wasn’t a big fan of making his childhood dream character the way we saw him in that film. He wanted to take Pool onto a whole other level. So in saying that, what you see in the ads, is what you will get, times a million. It’s also safe to say that if you’re not on top of the Marvel films and popular culture for that matter, you won’t get half the jokes or puns. He takes a dig at so many other superheroes, including Wolverine and Deadpool’s role there, and even pokes fun at Reynolds’ stint as Green Lantern. I sat in a cinema where most people in the audience obviously didn’t understand half of what he was referencing, and the only ones laughing were my partner and I.

This role was made for Reynolds. Well, when you think about it, he’s been wanting and fighting for this to happen for years, and dreamed of playing the man himself.

I also love the fourth wall (I learned a new technique this week) concept in this film. Deadpool knows he’s in a movie, so he will stop every now and then to look at the camera and talk to the audience. This is not a distraction to the film and fits in perfectly with the character we are introduced to. It’s a bit of a contradiction, and this will make sense when you’ve watched it, but I think, though Deadpool wants to kill the man who made him the way he is for reasons I will not go into, he’s still so in love with himself, and that’s what makes the fourth wall technique so funny.

Another character I think you will love in this, just as much as I did, is Colossus (voiced by Stefan Kapicic). He’s meant to be a serious character, and a big, metal scary bear that is actually quite sensitive and emotional, but without wanting to, breaks into a funny. He is fantastic.

I also wanted to mention the R rating. Why? Because an ad came out just before the films release, from Deadpool himself, in a letter form. He was asking for parents to not take their underage children to watch the film and then complain about it, because that will hurt the franchise and the possibility of them making a sequel. The over sensitive and highly offended by everything will be offended by the sex jokes, nudity, the blood and the guts. This is not a kid friendly film. Go buy Ant-Man and show the kids that one. Or even wait for Civil War, maybe. So in saying that, it is obvious; it is not a watered down action film.

Deadpool is a reinvented take on the superhero genre about a guy who is very anti-superhero. He is on a personal vendetta to say the least. It is worth every bit of your time and attention, but please do not over analyse and just enjoy the ride. This was great!
I give Deadpool, staring the amazingly fit Ryan Reynolds a 4 out of 5. Go watch it (if you’re over 18).
