I have been so bloody excited about Suicide Squad since the first trailers and snippets were released almost a year ago. The cast, the colour, the concept, it all looked as insane as the characters themselves. Admittedly, my hopes were high. I wasn’t disappointed. I had such faith in this and it delivered.

After what I have obviously expressed in the past, were a disappointing couple of Superman movies, director David Ayer, who has written some hits and only directed a few other movies, saved the path of the intertwining DC films. Zack Snyder could jot down some tips from Ayer.

I was sort of familiar with what the suicide squad was, thanks to my love for the hit show, Arrow. Of course, with a bit more research to go with that, I knew it was about bringing together some of the worst criminals, to fight something even more evil than them, and ultimately something as strong as Superman. If they tried to escape, a trigger would be pressed, initialising an explosion of a bomb inserted into their necks.

From the opening, the colourful DC and WB logos got me peeing in my pants. The soundtrack that goes with this movie is strong and suitable.

With the appearances of Will Smith as Deadshot and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn from the very beginning, I knew this was going to go full throttle. We were already at the peak of what was going to be the most thrilling rollercoaster.

SUICIDE SQUAD

Massive prompts to all the actors on taking on their role so perfectly. The stand out of course was Robbie as Quinn. She played all aspects of her psychotic and vulnerable personality so immaculately. Viola Davis as Amanda Waller is a badass. She’s the brains behind the squad and plays a great sly and manipulative woman in high power. The next great bit of acting came from another Aussie. Jai Courtney as Boomerang was fantastic. He plays the drunk and dangerous thief hilariously and truly depicts the persona of a slob.

When it comes to The Joker, it’s hard to fall in love with another actor’s version of him, when Heath Ledger did it so well. But that isn’t taking away from how evil Jared Leto is as The Joker. Leto’s Joker laugh is freaky. Nevertheless, his version is definitely on par and I’m excited to see him again.

Cara Delevingne is someone I’m still getting used to as an actor. She’s done well here, becoming the Enchantress. She projected the witch’s seductive scariness with plenty of volume. The way she moved, the way she touched, the way she stared; all very important aspects of the Enchantress’ character, and Delevingne nailed it.

Speaking of, one clear strange decision I found was the sudden and non-explained appearance of the Enchantress’ brother. The way he was evolved, or chosen, wasn’t very clear and a bit of a bump in the rollercoaster. His significance is lost; though it’s clear he is the Enchantress’ guard. If it wasn’t for her need to be protected, his position is almost unnecessary.

Another slight fault, if we are nit-picking here, is the writer’s failure to bring forward the rightful lead character. You would think it was Deadshot, but when you realise the story itself, it should actually be about Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman). I can’t say much more without giving away the main story line, but the focus should have been on him. You’ll know what I mean when you watch it, because I do recommend you watch it, and definitely while it’s in cinemas.

Suicide-Squad-5-2

It’s hard not to be entertained by Suicide Squad. It’s dark where it needs to be and it’s funny where necessary. I was thoroughly impressed and amused the entire time. It’s the right amount of length for the right amount of information. Applause to all involved.

Suicide Squad is worth seeing on the big screen with a giant soda and a giant bucket of popcorn. You will be entertained. 4 out of 5.
