It’s been a while since my concert going crew and I had been to Rod Laver for a concert. It’s also been a while since I’ve done a live gig review, so here goes nothing. Nevertheless, it was super exciting to finally see some live international acts, and nothing screams good first choice than LA’s own, Billie Eilish.

With an overbearing, young female dominated crowd, Billie literally bounced out onto the stage in an oversized Sailor Moon T, cute little shorts, high socks and some sneakers, to a screeching, piercing scream from her fans. Sporting two pony tail buns, it’s almost hard to hear the Bad Guy singer’s voice over the singalong crowd. Regardless, she had everybody’s butts off their seats and bouncing everywhere.

First obvious thing worth noting is that Billie didn’t need elaborate staging or a huge number of band members, or even dancers to put on a fun show. Less is more here. Accompanied only by her brother Finneas, Andrew on the drums, and a few lasers and large lights that bounced and hopped around with every beat, all she had to do was walk up the cat walk with hands on hips, and she would have the crowd screaming. She would even do something as simple as poking out her tongue and the crowd held on to that as though it was a momentous moment.

Tracks like Bury A Friend, NDA, Therefore I Am and My Strange Addiction were performed with a few graphics on the massive screen behind the almost 21 year old. These graphics were mostly haunting and disturbing images. We’re talking giant spiders and something like a demogorgan. But it wasn’t all an early Halloween display. Latin dancers would lighten things up on the screen, while she performed one of my faves, Billie Bossa Nova.

At one point Billie announced that she had a few rules during her shows, including “don’t be an asshole” and “have fun”. Soon after, she would bring her producer/musician brother down to the centre of the stage, acoustic guitar in tow, to perform I Love You, until she too would sport an acoustic guitar for Your Power.

Soon, the back rows would get a close up of Billie as she jumped on a rotating cherry picker which would extend her out so close to that dreaded, front of stage, back row. Those patrons did not have to worry about having the worst seats in the house. This is where she would sadly perform a short version of Ocean Eyes. And while she made her way down and back onto the main stage, we were graced with home videos of baby Billie.

When was the last time you saw flowers being thrown on stage? Well, I haven’t in ages, but strategically during Lost Cause bouquets were flung directly in front of Billie, which she would pick up and sing with. Soon after, she would literally let her hair down, confirm “it’s not a fucking wig,” and then would almost conduct a meditation like class where she had the crowd almost completely quiet, and asking them to check in with deep breaths, before angelically belting out When The Party’s Over.

All Good Girls Go To Hell was accompanied with important messages, such as taking care of our planet. Billie’s support of bettering the planet was obvious with only canned beverages being offered at the venue’s bars. She also mentioned that we “got to take care of each other”. This suitably followed with Everything I Wanted.

To end the show, Billie declared her love for her fans, thanked everyone involved in putting her show together, shared how sad she is to end the tour in two more shows, then blasted Bad Guy, and finally, while it rained confetti, everyone’s favourite, Happier Than Ever.

Never in my concert going life, and I usually go to many, have I been amongst a crowd that was so piercing and overpoweringly loud, they wouldn’t even miss a lyric. I know I say this as though I’m an old fart complaining, but I can confirm it wasn’t enough to deter me from enjoying Billie Eilish live for the first time. She is an incredible performer with a stunning voice, that though quiet, still has so much might. I look forward to the new album she confirmed she was working on, and future shows. And I hope she never steers away from a less is more type of show that she clearly has a good hold on, and does perfectly.
