Large props and loads of colour; that’s what a Katy Perry show looks like. It’s also theatrical and a stand-up comedy show. Just add her hits and a few (shamefully admitting) lesser known songs from the Witness album, and that’s the show we were blessed with that August night in Melbourne. I won’t lie, I was really concerned about seeing Katy Perry live because most of her live performances I’ve seen on TV have not done her, actually very strong vocals, any justice. She’d be off key and a little messy, but I quickly forgot about my concerns from the get-go. The girl can sing live!

The large props started off with the giant eye LED screen which took up the entire stages background and showcased basically every colour of the chroma-verse (yeah, I made that up because I can’t think of the actual word, but still want to use it). The screen would split in half and Katy would be suspended on a giant star belting out Witness and Roulette. But it’s not long before she throws out all her best hits from Teenage Dream and, of course, her first hit, I Kissed a Girl. She even did a little nod to Janet Jackson with What Have You Done For Me Lately during Bon Appetit.

Left Shark made an appearance. You might remember him from that infamous Super Bowl performance. This is one of quite a few moments where Katy shared her personality with the audience. She did plenty of chatting which left fans belly laughing. Left Shark and Katy played some classical music on a giant floor keyboard, just to add to the comedy element of the show.

Katy even invited a few fans on the stage, including a lovely young lady who performs at kids parties dressed as Katy. It was also here that Katy broke it down with Wide Awake and Into Me You See, and sat on a giant Saturn like planet which took her over the crowd and back onto the stage.

Swish Swish
got the kids ‘flossing’ and Katy noticed every single one of them in the crowd, challenging them for the chance to join her on stage and play supersize basketball with her.

Roar would start the encore section of the night and Firework would end it with literal fireworks taking centre stage with Katy standing on a giant open palmed hand.

Everything was larger than life. If it wasn’t the giant flamingos, or the creature which appeared during E.T., or the long stemmed rose her dancer, Fernando showed off his incredible core strength during some pole dancing, while she sang Tsunami, her big personality would be enough to invade the stage.

I’m a little sad she didn’t do Unconditionally, which is a favourite, but I do now have a new favourite in Into Me You See which before that night I hadn’t heard. Despite my lack of knowledge of the Witness album, I had so much fun with Katy Perry. She definitely makes you feel a part of her (no pun intended, or is it…?) and with all the vibrant colours on show, it was such a positive environment to be in.
