What an incredible experience this was. It was such a seriously awesome, cool concept, that was an absolute pleasure to witness. I just want to vomit all the affirmative words out of my mouth, while I smile and bash the keys of my keyboard. Though it was tense at times, Free Guy is a light as a feather, action comedy we all need right now.

What I assume is based off the ever popular game, Fortnite, Free Guy is one intellectually, neatly put together film, that doesn’t really need a genius to understand.
Guy (Ryan Reynolds) is a blue shirt wearing, bank teller known as an NPC (non-playable character), who eventually discovers he is nothing but a background character to a game called, Free City. Millie (Jodie Comer) is convinced that the creator of the game, Antwan (Taika Waititi) has stolen all the codes she developed with her ex-boyfriend, Keys (Joe Keery) when they were coming up with their own playable world. She is sure he’s hidden the evidence in the game itself, and uses her gaming character, Molotovgirl, to find it and reveal Antwan as the narcissistic, tech thief that he is. All that with a little help from the popular character, Blue Shirt Guy (Guy is Blue Shirt Guy, ICYMI), who he himself, is trying to wrap his head around the fact that he is a well programmed A.I.
I firstly want to give a huge round of applause to the special effects team. The people behind placing every little detail to this world that is Free City, are the true geniuses here. From glitching background characters, to bonuses and characters running into walls, I cannot stress how perfectly placed these little elements are, to make the entire film feel more like you’re playing the game, rather than watching a film. My PS4 remote was nearby. I had the sudden urge to pick it up and start doing something! That’s before I realised, this is just a movie.
We cannot look passed the forever in Deadpool persona, Ryan Reynolds. He is once again, hilarious. He delivers hysterical one liners with such ease, it truly feels like he gets it in only one take. Of course, Waititi turns up the cool and funny with his dry and sarcastic humour. It’s just a sprinkle here and there from the Thor: Ragnarok director, but it’s enough to cement his position well, and truly.
My heart is also full for the love letter that is Millie and Keys. Though the story can get tense at times, you know; with the matter of taking back what was once theirs, it’s a refreshing love story between the two; a modern one, in fact. I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s a beautiful thing to watch how this game they once developed together, is how they show their love and appreciation for each other, without it being an in-your-face love story.
By the end, I can honestly say, I fell in love with this movie. It was just so much fun to watch. If you’re having a bad day, make sure Free Guy is the one you put on to ensure you ‘don’t just have a good day, you have a great day!’ That reference will make sense when you watch it. Enjoy!
