I’m one episode in Ms Marvel and this is pretty cool. Not going to lie. I’m still finding it really hard to move on from the Avengers we know and love, and begin to connect with these new young superheroes. Though I’ve enjoyed each of them thus far, I’m loving them from a distance. I have no real attachment to them like I did with the others. But maybe Ms Marvel, or Kamala Khan will change that.

Ms Marvel follows Kamala (Iman Vellani), a 16 year old student with her head in the clouds. She loves the Avengers, especially Captain Marvel, and spends her free time producing some awesome superhero themed content under her own production company, Sloth Baby Productions. The goal in this episode is to convince her strict Pakistani Muslim parents to allow her to go to the Avengercon convention with her best friend Bruno (Matt Lintz). Her mother (Zenobia Shroff) especially forbids it, as she showcases that line between a respectable woman, and what she is and is not allowed to do, or even wear.

To start with, I’m super impressed by the visuals here. That interactive background, forced the eye to travel right across the screen, not in a disruptive way, but to help with the message to come across. Existing neon signs show up with the texts that are being interchanged between Bruno and Kamala, or the paint on the road are replaced with emojis. Animated and just everyday items such as light fixtures in the house, interact like they are part of the story telling. And best of all, is the comic book illustrations that are being used to describe the story that Kamala is narrating. All this is awesome to experience. It is definitely kid friendly and targeted, but as a 33 year old, I didn’t mind it at all, if I say so myself.

The true take-it-to-heart Marvel fans would notice that Kamala isn’t stretching her actual limbs. In the comics, her superpower is that she can stretch tall or long. But with the help of her Neni’s (check the spelling on that) bracelet, it’s more of an amplification of her being. Seems like something more cosmic than something more “realistic”.

Overall, I’m super excited to watch the rest of this. Kamala is the first young, not yet Avenger that has sparked my interest and I am looking forward to seeing the journey of the not yet declared Ms Marvel. Bring it.
