I’m one episode in of Squid Game, and what the fuck did I just watch?!
This shit excites my life. I guess you could say I’m just as fucked in the head as the dude in charge of this thing. Perhaps the creator of the story, himself. Sorry, a lot of swearing this time round; swears out of excitement and delightfulness.

It’s legit a Saw and Hunger Games infusion. This goldmine out of South Korea was all the rave few months back. And, rightly so. It’s captivating, nail-biting, jaw-dropping, edge-of-your seat, *insert another cliché description here*, stuff.

Gi-Hun Seong (Jung-Jae Lee) is a gambling idiot, who chauffer’s to make ends meet. However, that barely pays for anything. His forced to borrow money from some thug, who obviously wants to be paid back. Seong cannot afford that, or to give his daughter a birthday dinner she well deserves. With news that his daughter’s mother and her step-father plan to take her to the US, due to a job opportunity the new dad has received, and the fact that a biological father can fight for custody if he is able to show substantial financial stability, Seong is left with no choice, but to take on the offer given to him by some stranger he met at the train station; a stranger, the Salesman (Gong Yoo) who indicates that if he takes part in the games, he can get some serious dosh out of it.

Firstly, this, in show form is where it begins to win. The mystery of who these people are behind the vicious games, sporting those now super-recognisable masks, is a next level anxiety attack (figuratively). Moreover, I’ve never been friendly to anything Korean before, because I always find them too overdramatic and the acting, amplified. But this thing right here, is well written, and well performed. That’s just episode one. It is also worth mentioning that our main female lead, Sae-Byeok Kang (Jung Hoyeon) is such a likable character. She gives off all those badass vibes. I feel I will be rooting for her through this whole fun, shit-show.

This episode alone will forever change how I see the familiar, Red Light, Green Light kids game. Even if you haven’t watched this show yet, the memes or the name itself has popped up on your feed, for sure. It is such a simple game, but episode one has made it seem intense and terrifying.

Now, excuse me. I have to make the most of this kid’s naps, because this shit definitely ain’t for a toddler. I am beaming with excitement to demolish this show as quickly as I can.
